Starting therapy: what to expect

Taking the first step is a big deal, and you don't have to do it alone. Therapy isn't about having all the answers. It's a space to slow down, be heard, and discover practical tools that support healing and growth. You can start wherever you are, every emotion is welcome, and we move at your pace.

What your first session looks like

  • A warm welcome, we take time to settle in and get comfortable
  • Getting to know you, what brings you here and what you hope to focus on
  • Exploring together, your experiences, strengths and goals
  • Building a plan that feels right for you and your journey
  • Next steps, you leave with clarity about what to expect moving forward

Five things you don't need to worry about

  • You don't need to have everything figured out, therapy is a space to explore, not to have all the answers
  • You don't need to be "perfect", you are welcome exactly as you are
  • You don't have to talk about everything right away, you go at your pace, there's no rush
  • You don't need to prepare, just show up, that's enough
  • You don't have to feel better right away, healing is a process, and small steps matter

What can help you prepare

  • Write down what's been on your mind
  • Think about what you hope to get out of therapy
  • Bring questions, you're welcome to ask anything
  • Be kind to yourself, you're showing up for you

Questions you can ask your therapist

  • What can I expect from therapy?
  • How will we work together?
  • What approaches do you use?
  • How will we know if it's helping?
  • How often will we meet?
  • Can I reach out between sessions if I need to?

A gentle reminder

Therapy is for every version of you, whether you're struggling, adjusting, healing, or just feeling overwhelmed. You don't have to be in crisis to benefit. You are allowed to seek support simply because you want to understand yourself better, feel more connected, or create positive change in your life. You are allowed to take up space. You are not too much. You are not alone. You are enough.

If this page answered some of the nerves but not all of them, that's normal. A free consult is a gentle place to ask the rest, and to see how it feels to talk.
